It is a dark time for the Rebellion. Although the Death Star has been destroyed, Imperial troops have driven the rebel forces from their hidden base and pursued them across the galaxy.
Evading the dreaded Imperial Starfleet, a group of freedom fighters led by Luke Skywalker has established a new secret base on the remote ice world of Hoth.
The evil lord Darth Vader, obsessed with finding young Skywalker, has dispatched thousands of remote probes into the far reaches of space...
Darth Vader leads a galaxy-spanning hunt for the Rebel Alliance and Luke Skywalker. He sends out thousands of droid probes to investigate remote planets in all sectors of the galaxy. One of the probes lands on the ice planet Hoth, which is indeed the location of the rebels' new base. Luke Skywalker and Han Solo are helping establish perimeter sensors when Luke is captured by a Wamba Ice Creature.
After Han rescues Luke, Han and Chewbacca investigate the droid probe that has landed on Hoth. Realizing their base has been discovered, the rebels began evacuating immediately. Nonetheless, Darth Vader's fleet arrives before the rebels can leave, and the Empire launches a full-scale assault on the base. The rebel leadership barely escapes in time. Vader pursues the Millennium Falcon into an asteroid field but Luke, responding to the influence of Obi-Wan Kenobi's spirit, changes course for the Dagobah system.
On Dagobah, Luke searches for Yoda, who reluctantly accepts him as a pupil in the Jedi arts. While Luke studies with Yoda, Han, Leia, Chewbacca, and C-3P0 flee from the Imperial fleet. Vader resorts to sending out bounty hunters, including Boba Fett. After the Imperial fleet leaves the Hoth system, Han plots a course for Bespin, where he hopes to get help from Lando Calrissian. Boba Fett follows the Falcon and alerts the Empire to Han's destination.
Arriving at Bespin, Han and his companions are welcomed by Lando, who agrees to repair the Millennium Falcon. But Darth Vader has already arrived and he is secretly taking control over Cloud City. He forces Lando to turn Han's party over to him, and he begins torturing the prisoners without asking questions.
Still on Dagobah, Luke becomes aware of his friends' suffering. Yoda explains that Vader is using the others as bait. Luke refuses to follow Yoda's advice and he leaves Dagobah before his training is completed. Arriving at Cloud City, Luke is drawn into Vader's trap. As Luke and Vader duel throughout the city, Lando turns against the empire and orders his people to evacuate the city. He then rescues Leia, Chewbacca, and the droids. But they are too late to save Han, who has been frozen in carbonite and given to Boba Fett.
In a final confrontation with Luke, Vader reveals that he is Anakin Skywalker. Luke, overwhelmed by the revelation, throws himself out of the city. Lando and Chewbacca use the Millennium Falcon to rescue Luke. They take him to a rendezvous with the rebel fleet in deep space, where Luke is healed and together they resolve to rescue Han from Jabba the Hutt, to whom Boba Fett was going to sell Han's carbonite prison.
