It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire.
During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet.
Pursued by the Empire's sinister agents, Princess Leia races home aboard her starship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy...
Darth Vader's star destroyer overtakes Leia Organa's cruiser. She slips the stolen plans for the Death Star into R2-D2 and distracts the Imperial Storm Troopers while R2-D2 and C-3P0 escape in a pod to the planet Tattooine. On the planet, the droids are captured and enslaved by Jawas. Darth Vader captures Leia and sends storm troopers to recover the stolen plans.
Owen Lars purchases R2-D2 and C-3P0 from the Jawas and orders his nephew, Luke Skywalker, to get them cleaned up and into service. Luke discovers that R2-D2 is carrying a message for Obi-Wan Kenobi, whom Luke guesses may be his friend Ben Kenobi. R2 tricks Luke into removing the restraining bolt that Jawas had placed on it, and the droid flees the Lars farm at the first opportunity.
In the morning, Luke takes C-3P0 in pursuit of R2-D2. They encounter a party of Tusken Raiders, who overcome Luke but are frightened off by Ben Kenobi. Ben takes Luke and the droids to his home, where he plays R2-D2's message from Leia, begging for his help against the empire. Ben reveals that he and Luke's father, Anakin, had once been Jedi Knights. Ben tells Luke that he must go to Alderaan with Ben. Luke is skeptical but offers to take Ben as far as the town of Anchorhead.
On the way to Anchorhead, Luke and Ben find the sand crawler belonging to the Jawas who sold the droids to Owen Lars. All the Jawas are dead. Ben points out that Imperial Storm Troopers attacked the crawler. Luke rushes back to the farm only to discover that Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru are dead. He returns to Ben and the droids, now determined to go to Alderaan and become a Jedi Knight.
Reaching Mos Eisley spaceport, Ben meets with Han Solo and Chewbacca, who agree to take Ben, Luke, and the droids on their ship, the Millennium Falcon. But as they negotiate, storm troopers are searching the town. Ben and Luke leave the cantina and sell their speeder. Han is delayed by Greedo, a bounty hunter sent by Jabba the Hutt to kill him.
Ben and Luke find the Millennium Falcon's docking bay just ahead of a group of storm troopers. The ship takes off and barely escapes the blockade Darth Vader's fleet has established around the planet. The Falcon enters hyperspace and makes course for Alderaan.
But while Luke has been escaping from Tattooine, Darth Vader has returned to the Death Star with his prisoner, Princess Leia. She resists all interrogation, and Grand Moff Tarkin takes matters into his own hands. He orders the destruction of Alderaan. Leia reveals the name of a planet where the empire will find a rebel base, Dantooine, but it is too far away. Alderaan is destroyed anyway.
The Falcon comes out of hyperspace amid the debris of Alderaan. A lone Imperial Tie Fighter is patrolling the region. The Falcon gives pursuit until it comes within sight of the Death Star. By now it's too late, and the Falcon is caught in a tractor beam. Ben urges Han and Chewbacca not to resist.
When the Falcon is brought aboard the Death Star, the ship is searched by storm troopers who find nothing. A scanning team is sent aboard, but Han and the others overpower them and two guards. Sneaking into a nearby control room, they find the location of the control for the tractor beam. Ben resolves to disable the beam by himself. After Ben leaves, R2-D2 discovers Leia's location. Luke persuades Han and Chewbacca to help rescue her.
The three adventurers make their way to the prison cell block where Leia is being held. At the same time, Vader informs Tarkin that Obi-Wan Kenobi has arrived. Vader sets out to find Obi-Wan. Han, Luke, and Chewbacca free Leia but they cannot return the way they came. They escape into a garbage compactor. R2-D2 shuts down all compactors to prevent their deaths.
Ben disables the tractor beam as planned and then he makes his way back to the hangar. Luke and Leia become separated from Han and Chewbacca. Storm troopers search the Death Star. Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca, and the droids return to the ship, but Darth Vader overtakes Obi-Wan Kenobi. Obi-Wan distracts the storm troopers by dueling with Vader. When Vader kills Obi-Wan, Luke goes on a rampage. Han drags him aboard the Falcon.
The Falcon escapes from the Death Star and Leia tries to comfort Luke. She reveals that the empire has allowed the Falcon to escape so the ship can be tracked to the rebel base. Nonetheelss, Leia provides Han with the coordinates.
The rebels take the plans for the Death Star and analyze them. They quickly devise a plan of attack and prepare a strike force. The Death Star arrives in the planetary system and begins moving toward the moon where the rebels are based. The strike force, now including Luke, launches.
The rebel fighters swarm about the Death Star, making several attack runs at a vulnerable spot. It falls to Luke to make the final run, as Darth Vader has been picking off the most successful pilots. A last minute intervention by Han Solo in the Millennium Falcon sends Darth Vader spinning out into space. Luke fires his rounds at the vulnerable spot and the Death Star is destroyed just seconds prior to its firing on the rebel base. The rebels hold a great celebration and honor Luke, Han, and Chewbacca.
