War! The Republic is crumbling under attacks by the ruthless Sith Lord, Count Dooku. There are heroes on both sides. Evil is everywhere.
In a stunning move, the fiendish droid leader, General Grievous, has swept into the Republic capital and kidnapped Chancellor Palpatine, leader of the Galactic Senate.
As the Separatist Droid Army attempts to flee the besieged capital with their valuable hostage, two Jedi Knights lead a desperate mission to rescue the captive Chancellor...
Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker lead a daring counter-attack into the heart of General Grievous' fleet. The droid forces launch a massive strike force against the Jedi fighters, severely damaging Obi-Wan's ship and taking out his droid, R4. Despite the heavy resistance, the two Jedi succeed in breaching the defenses on General Grievous' ship and landing in the docking bay. Leaving R2-D2 to watch their craft, they fight their way toward a high observation deck where Supreme Chancellor Palpatine is being held prisoner. R2-D2 assists the Jedi as much as possible while defending itself against security droids.
Reaching the observation deck, Obi-Wan and Anakin find Chancellor Palpatine is held in a command chair by energy bonds. But before they can free him, Count Dooku emerges from another corridor. Obi-Wan and Anakin attack him, but Dooku is too powerful for Obi-Wan, who is knocked unconscious. Anakin, however, seethes with anger and resentment over the loss of his hand in their previous encounter, and he subtly outmaneuvers Dooku in a light-saber duel, cutting off both of Dooku's hands at the very end. Suddenly, as Anakin strives to calm himself, Palpatine orders Anakin to kill Dooku. Dooku looks at Palpatine in surprise, but says nothing while Palpatine uses his Sith powers to nudge Anakin's struggling mind toward the Dark Side of the Force. Anakin gives in and kills Dooku, but immediately feels remorse.
Freeing Palpatine, Anakin turns to help Obi-Wan. Palpatine urges Anakin to abandon the Jedi Master, but Anakin insists on saving them both. Anakin carries Obi-Wan into an elevator shaft just as the ship begins to dive into the atmosphere of Corruscant due to the heavy damage it has sustained. General Grievous, in the ship's command center, struggles to maintain order among the ship's biological crew while executing the plan that Dooku had carefully laid out for it.
Obi-Wan awakens in the elevator shaft, and he, Anakin, and Palpatine use their powers to survive a serious shift in gravitational perspective as the ship's erratic systems disengage and then re-engage. Eventually, the three find themselves on the command deck, where Obi-Wan and Anakin pretend to surrender to General Grievous. However, R2-D2 has joined them, and Obi-Wan gives R2-D2 a pre-arranged signal to launch a surprise attack on General Grievous. The Jedi quickly dispatch the droid guards Grievous has called upon, but the general escapes out an observation port and makes its way to an escape pod. From the escape pod, General Grievous orders its crew to abandon ship, and they leave Palpatine and the Jedi to die.
Obi-Wan assists Anakin in bringing a remnant of the ship in for a landing near the Chancellor's headquarters on Corruscant. Obi-Wan leaves Anakin to suffer through the diplomatic obligations of a hero's return. As the diplomatic party leaves the landing field, Padme Skywalker approaches Anakin from the shadows and they greet each other warmly. Padme tells Anakin that she is pregnant. He is at first shocked, but Anakin recovers quickly and agrees with Padme thath this is wonderful news. He calms her concerns about hiding the pregnancy and their marriage with encouraging words.
Everyone agrees by now that so long as General Grievous survives, the war will continue. But the Jedi Council is growing more concerned about Palpatine's tenure in office, which has proven to be unusually long. He is more popular than ever with the Senate despite concerns from a few key senators such as Bail Organa of Alderaan.
Palpatine appoints Anakin as his personal representative on the Jedi Council. The Jedi Masters reluctantly agree to the appointment but they refuse to elevate Anakin to the status of Jedi Master, a decision which Anakin finds insulting and demeaning. Obi-Wan attempts to soothe Anakin's anger by reminding him that he is the youngest Jedi to ever serve on the Council, as well as giving Anakin a secret mission "off the record" of reporting on Palpatine's activities.
Palpatine, fully aware of the Jedi Council's concerns, uses his friendship with Anakin to instill doubt in the young Jedi about the motives and intentions of the Jedi Council. At the same time, Anakin begins to dream about Padme's death, and he fears his dreams are a true foretelling like those which warned him of his mother's death. Padme struggles to maintain an emotional bond with Anakin, but he is consumed with fear, anger, and suspicion. Palpatine gradually tells Anakin some of the secrets of the Sith, including a legend about a Sith Lord who learned how to protect his loved ones from death.
With a seed of rebellion planted and growing in Anakin's mind, Palpatine turns to dividing the Jedi Council. He orders General Grievous to send the leaders of the Separatists to a remote volcanic world for safety. But then Palpatine reveals Grievous' location through Anakin to the Jedi Council. The Council orders Obi-Wan to seek out and destroy General Grievous, but Anakin resents not being included in the mission. He now understands that the Council does not fully trust him.
In a final ploy, Palpatine reveals himself as the Sith Lord the Jedi have been seeking to Anakin. Shocked and unnerved, Anakin reports this relevation to Jedi Master Mace Windu, who orders Anakin to wait in the Jedi Council Chamber until he returns. Most of the Council members are scattered across the galaxy, leading Clone armies against the droid armies of the Separatist worlds. Windu and three other Jedi Masters go to Palpatine's office to arrest him, and Palpatine uses his Sith powers to quickly slay three of the Jedi Masters, but he seems no match for Mace Windu.
Obi-Wan arrives at a planet in the sector where General Grievous is said to be located. The planet's inhabitants quickly warn Obi-Wan that the general is there with an immense droid army. Obi-Wan sets out to hunt down the General, and at a pre-arranged time a Clone army attacks the droid army. Obi-Wan and Grievous engage in a running duel.
Consumed with fear of Padme's impending death, Anakin follows the Jedi Masters to Palpatine's office. There he finds Mace Windu locked in a life-and-death struggle. Palpatine's Dark Force powers seem no match for Windu's light saber, and Palpatine pleads with Anakin to help him. As Anakin watches the duel, Palpatine's body is horribly disfigured by the rebounding energy of his own powers. Realizing that if Palpatine dies, he will never save Padme, Anakin strikes out at Mace Windu, severing his arm. Palaptine seizes the advantage and kills Windu. Anakin, filled with remorse, nonetheless swears his loyalty to Palpatine, who orders Anakin to kill all the Jedi left in the temple.
Palpatine then contacts all the Clone army commanders and initiates Order 66. The Clone armies begin assassinating their Jedi leaders, beginning with Obi-Wan Kenobi. But Obi-Wan survives the attempt on his life and he steals a ship, returning to Corruscant. However, Anakin's attack on the Jedi temple is swift and decisive. He himself kills most of the young Jedi trainees while thousands of Clone troopers destroy the Jedi Knights and the surviving Masters. Senator Organa arrives at the temple in time to see the last surviving Jedi trainee nearly break free of the Clone troopers, but they shoot down the young warrior and allow Organa to flee. Organa immediately races to his spaceship and leaves Corruscant. He sends out a signal to all remaining Jedi to join him at a secret location.
Padme sees the attack on the Jedi temple from her apartment. She watches in fear and pain as she senses the deaths of the Jedi, but she does not know what has happened to Anakin until he appears. He tells her that the Jedi have turned against the Republic and attempted to assassinate Palpatine. Padme becomes confused and struggles to comprehend what is happening. Anakin tells her he must leave to complete another mission.
Of all the remaining Jedi Masters, only Yoda senses the betrayal of the Jedi Order. He kills the Clone soldiers sent to kill him, and the Wookies -- whose world he has been defending against the droids -- shield Yoda from the remaining Clone troops. Yoda flees in a small ship and he detects Organa's signal. He joins Obi-Wan on Organa's ship, where the three decide that they must return to Corruscant and learn what has happened. As Organa's ship enters orbit, he receives a message to attend an emergency session of the Senate. Yoda and Obi-Wan secretly return to the Jedi temple and discover the bodies of the slain Jedi. But Anakin is nowhere to be found because Palpatine has sent him to assassinate Nute Gunray and the other leaders of the Separatist worlds.
In the Senate, Palpatine accuses the Jedi of trying to overthrow the Republic and of attempting to assassinate him. He announces the only way to restore peace to the galaxy is to proclaim the First Galactic Empire. Most of the Senators wildly applaud his decree while Padme and Bail Organa look on with growing horror. At the Jedi temple, Obi-Wan reprograms the Jedi communications system to warn any surviving Jedi to stay away -- but Yoda senses it is already too late. As they leave, Obi-Wan insists on looking at the security records, and he learns that Anakin has betrayed the Jedi.
Meeting with Bail Organa again, Yoda and Obi-Wan learn about the creation of the empire. Yoda resolves to kill the emperor while he sends Obi-Wan to kill Anakin. Bail Organa remains on Corruscant to help Yoda. Obi-Wan visits Padme, who refuses to tell him where Anakin has gone. Obi-Wan now realizes that Anakin is the father of Padme's child, and he expresses deep sympathy for her. But Padme cannot wait any longer. Having heard Obi-Wan's account of Anakin's betrayal, she takes ship and follows him to the outer rim of the galaxy. Obi-Wan secretly stows away on her ship.
Yoda confronts the newly self-proclaimed Emperor in the Senate building. Palpatine stuns Yoda with a surprise attack and gloats over his fallen enemy, but Yoda quickly recovers and nearly destroys Palpatine. They wage a duel of great power through the Senate chamber. In the meantime, Padme reaches the outer rim and finds Anakin alone on the volcanic world. He has already completed his mission and has even ordered all the droid armies to shut down. Padme argues with Anakin, who becomes angry when she refuses to see things from his perspective. In anger, Anakin uses his power to choke Padme, who passes out.
Obi-Wan emerges from Padme's ship and he begins to fight Anakin. Their duel carries them far from the ship and Padme's unconscious form. As the last droid foundry crumbles around them, Anakin and Obi-Wan struggle for mastery. In the end, Obi-Wan claims the higher ground. "It's over, Anakin!" he warns. "I have the high ground!" Anakin ignore's Obi-Wan's warning and attempts to leap over him. Obi-Wan slices off Anakin's legs and Anakin falls toward a lava flow. Ashes from the lava spit up onto Anakin and he is burned horribly. Obi-Wan takes Anakin's light saber and walks away.
Yoda senses that he cannot defeat the Emperor, so he flees the Senate chamber and rejoins Bail Organa, who takes Yoda to his ship. They leave Corruscant once again and head into deep space. Obi-Wan takes Padme to Organa's ship, where medical droids inform them that she has lost the will to live but is carrying twins. The medical droids deliver Padme's babies, whom she names Luke and Leia. With her last breath, she whispers, "There is good in him. I felt it."
Sensing Anakin's peril, Palpatine takes a ship from Corruscant to the outer rim. He finds Anakin, still barely alive, beside the lava flow. He takes Anakin back to Corruscant, where a medical facility assembles an environmental suit for Anakin. When Anakin awakens, Palpatine tells him that he, Anakin, killed Padme. Anakin's final agony secures his enslavement to Palpatine's will.
Bail Organa, Yoda, and Obi-Wan agree that Padme's children must go into hiding. Organa offers to take Leia and raise her as his own daughter, since he and his wife have been thinking of adopting a daughter anyway. Yoda orders Obi-Wan to take Luke to Tattooine, where his only known relatives (Owen Lars, Anakin's step-brother, and his wife Beru) still live. But Yoda reveals to Obi-Wan that Qui-Gon Jin has achieved a form of immortality by returning from the heart of the force. Yoda teaches Obi-Wan the secret of how to commune with Qui-Gon's spirit.
