The Return of the King 1980At Bilbo's 129th birthday party in Rivendell, Frodo and Bilbo disagree over the necessity of destroying the One Ring. Gandalf brings in a minstrel to tell the story of "Frodo of the Nine Fingers and the Ring of Doom" to clarify how things really progressed. After many adventures, Frodo and Sam have made their way to the edge of Mordor. Frodo has been captured by Orcs and Sam is determined to rescue him. Sam finds his way into the fortress and rescues Frodo. They escape from the fortress and begin the long trek across Mordor itself. Along the way, they fall in with a company of Orcs and are forced to march miles in the wrong direction. Only when the Orcs arrive at a crossroads where a company of evil Men dispute who will go first do Frodo and Sam have a chance to escape. Frodo and Sam reach Mount Doom, where Gollum waits for them. He attacks the hobbits but they drive him off. Frodo goes on to Sammath Naur alone and Sam follows after telling Gollum to leave. Sam watches in horror as Frodo claims the Ring for himself and vanishes. In Gondor, Denethor goes mad and orders his own execution. Pippin runs and finds Gandalf, telling him that Denethor has "gone looney". Gandalf is waiting for the arrival of King Theoden of Rohan, whose help alone can save Gondor. Gandalf rushes to the palace in time to see Denethor reveal he has a Palantir just before he dies. Gandalf sends Merry to Rohan to summon Theoden to help in the war against Sauron. Theoden brings his army and fights in the great Battle of the Pelennor Fields. A Nazgul attacks Theoden and kills him, but Eowyn and Merry overcome the Nazgul, who is himself slain. The Orcs who have been attacking Gondor begin to retreat. At this point, the Black Fleet arrives. Gandalf says that the southern lands have fallen, and Gondor is now about to be invaded from the south. But, no! Aragorn's standard is revealed on the lead ship, and Gandalf announces him as "he would be our king". Aragorn and Gandalf lead the Last Debate, where Aragorn argues that while the enemy is on the run, now is the time to strike. The armies of Gondor and Rohan are marshalled under Aragorn's leadership and led forth to Mordor. At the Black Gate, Aragorn demands Sauron's surrender. The Mouth of Sauron refuses to comply. Sam searches fruitlessly for Frodo and then sees Gollum struggling with an invisible person. Gollum pulls something up to his mouth and bites down. Frodo cries out as he becomes visible. His ring finger has been bitten off. Gollum dances madly and tumbles over the edge of the cliff into the fire below. Sauron's fortress is destroyed. Gandalf brings Eagles to rescue the hobbits from Mordor's ruin. Aragorn leads his victorious army back to Minas Tirith, where he and several lords (including Eowyn) ride into Minas Tirith as the city celebrates the defeat of Sauron. Frodo and the hobbits watch Aragorn's procession from high battlements and wave to the new king as he passes. The tale ended, Bilbo has fallen asleep in his chair. Gandalf predicts that hobbits will grow taller as the ages pass and join the ranks of men. But he and Elrond will be taking Bilbo away to the havens of the Elves. Frodo asks if he may go with them, and they agree. Sam, Merry, and Pippin see them off from the Grey Havens, waving good-bye as Gandalf, Elrond, Bilbo, and Frodo sail into the west.
