The Hobbit 1977Bilbo Baggins enjoys a bright morning smoke when Gandalf the Grey comes up and introduces himself. Bilbo recalls Gandalf from his youth. He invites Gandalf to tea the next day. When Gandalf is due to arrive, Bilbo instead finds himself playing host to thirteen dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield. Gandalf arrives at last and Bilbo learns that the dwarves are on their way to recover their lost home and treasure. They are seeking a burglar to help them steal back their gold from the powerful dragon Smaug. Bilbo is persuaded to join the dwarves on their adventure. But he soon begins to regret his decision when they meet three trolls. Gandalf helps defeat the trolls by tricking them into staying too long in the open, when sunlight catches them. Bilbo finds a large knife in the trolls' hoard, which he names Sting. The party reaches Rivendell, where Elrond and the Elves welcome them. From Rivendell, the party goes on into the Misty Mountains, where they are captured by Goblins. Bilbo is separated from the dwarves and he falls in with a strange creature who makes a "gollum" noise. Along the way, Bilbo finds a ring and puts it in his pocket. Gollum offers to guide Bilbo out if he wins a game of riddles. Bilbo and Gollum trade riddles until Bilbo asks, "What have I got in my pocket?" Gollum doesn't know, so Bilbo wins the riddle game. Bilbo escapes from Gollum, who realizes that Bilbo must have his magic ring. Bilbo leaves a furious Gollum shrieking in the darkness underneath the mountains. Bilbo rejoins Thorin and the dwarves and they escape from the goblins with the help of giant eagles. The eagles set Gandalf and the dwarves down by Mirkwood, where Gandalf bids them farewell and tells them how to reach Laketown in the distant east. Thorin and his companions enter Mirkwood but they become lost and hungry. They seek help from Elves but are captured by spiders. Using the magic ring he found, Bilbo rescues the dwarves from the spiders, but the dwarves are then captured by the wood-elves. The Elves question the dwarves, who refuse to say why they are in the forest. It falls to Bilbo to rescue the dwarves, which he does by hiding them in barrels and sending them downstream to the Laketown. There the dwarves are received by friendly men and their health is restored. The men send Bilbo and the dwarves off to seek their fortune with the dragon in his mountain. When they reach the Lonely Mountain, the dwarves find a way to enter through a secret door. They send Bilbo down to spy on Smaug, who smells Bilbo but cannot see him because Bilbo is wearing his magic ring. When Bilbo steals a cup from Smaug's hoard, the dragon erupts with fury. He attacks the dwarves and seals them inside the secret passage. Then he turns to Laketown. When Smaug attacks Laketown, however, he is slain by Bard the Bowman. Bard gathers an army and leads it north to claim the treasure of Smaug for himself. He is joined by an army of Elves. Bard and the Elves reach the Lonely Mountain, where they demand part of the treasure from Thorin, but Thorin refuses to grant their demands. Things look bleak until an army of Orcs and Wolves shows up. Gandalf now returns to bring all sides together in union against the Orcs and Wolves. The Battle of Five Armies is fought, and many people are slain. Bilbo awakens to find that Thorin himself has been mortally wounded. Thorin makes peace with Bard and the Elves before he dies. Gandalf and Bilbo return to Bilbo's home in the west.
